Well it was only a matter of time. Not only did my PC bomb out on me again but my laptop decided to follow suit. So that means I'm basically PC-less except at work and I really don't want to risk violating all of the company's internet security/usage policies. So Behr Blather is going to take a (hopefully short) hiatus until I can either get one or both machines up and running or I purchase a new device (considering a Macbook Pro). Hopefully this picture of Tober Brandt will tide everyone over until I return.BEHR HUGS!!

This is a bad time of the year for PCs. All the dry air in the house increases the risk of electrostatic discharge when a computer is touched.
A couple days ago I touched my laptop and there was a HUGE bolt of static electricity, big enough that I could see it, and it made a huge SNAP! I thought my laptop was fried for sure, but it was okay.
I don't know if static is your particular problem, but I hope you can get your machines fixed up.

@Larry: I wish it were that simple! No, this is some corrupt operating file. A friend fixed it but obviously it didn't last. And the laptop probably finally gave up because I've been rather abusive with it. I'm looking to make the switch to Mac, still researching.

Get a MacBook Pro. I changed from a PC to a MacBook Pro a year ago and have never once regretted it. It's worth the extra money.
