Sunday Favorite 22

What a week! Rehearsal every night and opening weekend of "Almost, Maine." Thankfully, it well both nights. Saturday night's performance felt slightly off; I think it may have been that I was feeling under the weather and just wanted it over.

When I got home from the theatre last night I needed to unwind. So I flicked on the TV and started surfing. Now remember, I don't have cable or satellite TV; I use my converter box and rabbit ears and watch the "public" stations. I came across a program on one of the local PBS stations that was about the animals rescued from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. What a heartbreaking story! So many people had to abandon their pets. Those pets that were rescued were sent all over the country because the local shelters and neighboring shelters were already full.

One story in particular was about a family that "fostered" an adorable dog. Somehow the original owner contacted the family, who refused to give up the dog. I think that was so wrong! This man was looking for his best friend and the woman didn't want to give up the dog; she said he (the dog) was part of her family now.

I often think about Winston, my cat, and what would happen in the event of a disaster. I try to keep a name tag (that also has my cell phone number on it) on Winston but he tends to somehow get it off his collar. I've considered having him chipped, just in case. I know that if anything were to happen to him because of some deficiency on my part, I would be devastated. He's my pal, my buddy. He's sitting next to me as I type this blog (he's checking my spelling).

If you're a pet owner or if you become a pet owner, PLEASE.... make sure your pet has adequate identification and include your loved one in your emergency plan. We are caretakers of these wonderful animals and we have a responsibility to do everything in our power to ensure their safety and well being. And please...spay/neuter your pets. We have an overpopulation and there are so many animals who need a home. Okay, I'm off my soap box.

I hope everyone had a good weekend. BEHR HUGS!!

It's odd - but I've ben through hurricane Ivan and just yesterday I was chatting about that with my friend Darquise (see my blog and the post called "Six Degrees of Seperation".
Turns out my friend had a cat that he thought was lost in Ivan. The house cleaner took the cat and gave it to one of her friends to take care of. My friend was away at the time the hurricane hit, so upon his return home - he thought the cat was dead.
It was some two months later, the cleaner said - so how's "Sweetie" - then he found out that the cat was alive.

I can't stand the thought of our dog being separated from us in the event of a tornado or something. She is adequately identified, so that is good.

We also have no cable TV. We cut the cable about 6 months ago and saved TONS of money. We were watching the major networks 80% of the time anyway, so it was no big deal. One cool thing is that when we had cable it was standard definition. Now that we get TV over the air, all the channels are HD. Nice!

My housemates have six cats. One has sort of adopted me.
I didn't get the dog in the divorce, but I get to visit once in awhile.

I think I might have seen the same show. I also remember an episode of Caesar Milan where they showed pets rescued from New Orleans and the web-based directory they set up to reunite pets with their families. It was heartwarming.
