Arizona State Offensive Lineman Comes Out
Edward "Chip" Sarafin, offensive lineman at Arizona State University, has publicly come out as gay. He is believed to be the first openly gay major division college football player.
Read more here especially a word from the Sun Devils' coach, Todd Graham.
Can I just say that I'd jump this bear's bones in a heartbeat. WOOF! And congratulations Chip. You're my hero today.

Admiration
There are those of us of a certain age (ahem) who remember a very young Neil Patrick Harris as "Doogie Howser, MD," a television show about a 16-year old medical prodigy who balanced adult life situations as a licensed doctor and teenage angst. Nowadays, we know NPH as "Barney" on "How I Met Your Mother," a television sitcom about a group of 30-somethings in NY.
NPH is also an out and proud husband and father. He's a sterling example of "gay is normal" and I dare anyone to dislike this talented man.
Last night, the 2012 Tony Awards aired. I totally forgot about it until well into the broadcast...I did catch the performance of "Evita" (up for best musical revival), Patti Lupone, Mandy Patinkin, Christopher Plummer, Candice Bergen, and a host of others. As a theater fan, this is OUR Oscar night. To top it all off, NPH hosted again and brought the house to its feet with the opening number.
If you missed it, watch it now (or rewatch it):
So my admiration is overflowing for this absolutely talented man. He's no longer the geeky kid; he's turned into a sexy & funny performer. And if you didn't see last year's opening number - Theater Isn't Just for Gays - I urge you to search for it on YouTube and be prepared to be entertained.
So as we celebrate Pride this month...give it up for one of our own: Neil Patrick Harris!

Behr Sunday POV

Today is the Gay Pride parade/event in Long Beach, which is a suburb of Los Angeles. This event has grown in size and I know many who attend it in lieu of attending the LA one because it is "nicer." So to my local gay brothers and lesbian sisters, Happy Pride. Enjoy yourself, have fun, and be safe.

Behr Pick: Painted Hunk

This is perhaps especially true as those of us in the U.S. prepare to celebrate Independence Day. We are Americans of which - deep down - we are proud to be. As gay Americans, that pride is tarnished by our second class citizenship. It's a tough place to be. Just because of who we love and who we are.
In Del Shores' "Sordid Lives," Ty, the gay character, talks about how he loved church as a boy and he misses church as a gay adult. He then says "How do you embrace something that doesn't embrace you?"
That's America. We love this country because it does afford us many freedoms; just not the same freedoms as everyone else. We love this country because, despite its many shortcomings, it is the greatest country on the face of the earth. But is that enough? Do we continue to embrace this great country that does not embrace us? Or is it time to abandon our complacency and step up to the plate to issue a call to action? Do we fight back? And when I say fight, I mean FIGHT. Do we dare rise up against the democratic aristocracy that is known as Congress and the clergy? Do we become like the French Resistance fighters of WWII or those who ran the Underground Railroad during the American Civil War? Do we truly have a cause worth fighting for?
I don't know the answer. But this July 4 as we barbecue, watch fireworks and perhaps get a little drunk - let's examine ourselves and our situation and ask ourselves: are we satisfied with being just Americans? Or do we want to be GAY Americans?
